When he comes home, he calls his
friends and neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me. I have found
my sheep which was lost. I say to you, there is more joy in heaven over
one sinner that repents, than over ninety-nine just persons who need no
repentance.
What woman, having ten pieces of silver, if she loses one piece, does
not light a candle, sweep the house, and seek diligently until she
finds it? And when she has found it, she calls her friends and her
neighbors together, saying, Rejoice with me. I have found the piece
that was lost. I say to you, there is joy in the presence of the angels
of God over one sinner that repents.
And He said, A man had two sons. The younger of them said to his
father, Father, give me the portion of my inheritance. The father gave
him his portion and the younger son journeyed into a far country.
After he spent everything on riotous living and had nothing left, there
arose a mighty famine in that land. He began to be in want and the only
work he could get was feeding swine in a countryman's field. And he
would fain have filled his belly with the husks that the swine ate
because he had nothing to eat.
When he came to his senses, he said, How many of my father's hired
servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger! I
will arise and go to my father, and will say to him, Father, I have
sinned against heaven, and before thee.
