Second, you must keep reentering your bid rather than relying on
eBay to bump up your bid, as it does in proxy bidding, so others will always be
able to outbid you quicker than you can respond. You might do this if you only
want to bid one amount or if you are unsure how high you want to bid.
NOTE
Proxy bidding has several advantages. First, you do
not have to stand by and closely monitor the auction.
eBay makes sure you are the highest bidder until your
maximum is reached. Second, you may pay far less than
you are willing to pay, since the winning bid may be less
than your maximum amount.

UNDERSTANDING BID INCREMENTS
When free-bidding on an item, your bid can be anything
greater than the current maximum bid (which you may
only learn when you enter your own bid amount). You
want to use common sense, however, and limit yourself
to an amount that is not overly generous. Proxy bidding
is different. The automatic increment that eBay uses to
increase a bid amount is based on the
dollar amount of the bidding in process.
Table 3-1 contains the automatic
bidding increments that eBay uses. In
at least two circumstances, however,
you may find that your bid increment
is less. For example, if the difference
between your maximum bid amount
and the next highest bid amount is less
than the increment, your winning bid
would only be your maximum amount.
