For example, a seller offers 10 copper spoons at $10 each:
??? Bidder A bids $10 for 3 spoons.
??? Bidder B bids $10.50 for 5 spoons.
??? Bidder C bids $12.00 for 8 spoons.
??? Bidders B and C will both pay $10.50 for the spoons.
??? Bidder B will only get 2 spoons.
??? Bidder C will get all 8 spoons.
??? Bidder A will get no spoons since Bidders B and C zeroed out the quantity available.
Figure 3-10: A Dutch auction is one
in which multiple items are sold to
one or more bidders, but the bids
determine who gets how many
items and for how much.
NOTE
When a bidder wins a lesser quantity than what he or
she bid for, he or she can refuse to buy it, such as in the
example of Bidder B with the copper spoons. The bidder
doesn??™t have to pay for partial quantities. In that case, the
next bidder in line gets the items, if he or she wants them.
NOTE
Multiple-item auctions are only available if the number of
items times the price is less than $100,000.
